Rappler receives 2025 Freedom Flame Award from Friedrich Naumann Foundation

MANILA, Philippines – Rappler was one of five Freedom Flame Awardees recognized by Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) Philippines during a ceremony held on December 18 in Pasig City.

The Freedom Flame Award is given to individuals and initiatives that have made valuable contributions to strengthening democracy and freedom in the Philippines, according to FNF. The Freedom Flame, a gathering of FNF partners and allies where the award is presented, is on its 14th year.

Below are the five awardees and the citation read out during the ceremony:

  • Center for Liberalism and Democracy, a governance think tank, was recognized “for their commitment to advancing liberal principles, democratic governance, and civic participation in the Philippines.”
  • Rappler was cited “for amplifying truth, defending democracy, and inspiring collective action through journalism.”
  • Albay 1st District Representative Krisel Lagman-Luistro earned the award “for [her] dedication to championing good governance, advancing human rights, and upholding liberal democratic values through public service.”
  • Commission on Human Rights-Caraga, the regional office of the government human rights watchdog, was recognized “for strengthening human rights protection through the establishment of Human Rights Action Centers which contribute to accessible and responsive public service.”
  • Project Alaala Series, a collection of illustrated books by students commemorating human rights abuses during the Marcos dictatorship, was cited “for preserving historical memory and promoting truth-telling by educating young audiences on the lessons of Martial Law and the importance of safeguarding democratic freedoms.”

A plaque of recognition was also presented to Mamamayang Liberal Representative Leila de Lima, who delivered this year’s Freedom Speech. In her speech, she talked about the challenges she faced in her almost seven years of detention, how she overcame political persecution, and what lies ahead for the Philippines in fighting corruption and impunity.

Rappler’s head of community Pia Ranada accepted the award on behalf of the organization. CLD was represented by its chairperson Gerry Bulatao. CHR- Caraga was represented by its head, lawyer Aurora Cembrano-Ramos, while the Project Alaala Series was represented by its project adviser, human rights advocate Joyce Crisanto. – Rappler.com

People briefed on the matter said China’s State Administration for Market Regulation chose to end the competition inquiry into Google, a status in Chinese called “zhongzhi”, the Financial Times reported on Thursday, The FT added that Google has not yet received formal paperwork confirming the closure of the case. After talks with Chinese counterparts in Madrid, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said a September 17 deadline that could have disrupted the popular social media app in the United States pushed negotiators toward a possible agreement. He noted the deadline could be extended by 90 days to finish the terms, without giving specifics. Bessent said that when commercial details are made public, the arrangement would keep cultural features of TikTok that Chinese negotiators want to protect. “They’re interested in Chinese characteristics of the app, which they think are soft power. We don’t care about Chinese characteristics. We care about national security,” Bessent told reporters at the close of two days of meetings.
