The NBA postponed games on Sunday and moved up games on Monday due to the massive winter storm hammering a large portion of the country, leading to dangerous travel conditions.

What Games Were Postponed?

Games between the Dallas Mavericks and Milwaukee Bucks as well as the Memphis Grizzlies and Denver Nuggets were postponed Sunday as a result of the weather conditions. Many states were hit by several inches of snow and icy conditions, 17 of those states have declared states of emergency.

The Washington Wizards and the Charlotte Hornets were able to move their game up by six hours on Saturday and get it in ahead of the storm. Monday games in Atlanta and Charlotte were moved to the afternoon as the storm was still impacting travel throughout the region.

In a statement released by the NBA, the Dallas Mavericks attempted twice to fly to Milwaukee for their Sunday game against the Bucks, but the conditions did not allow it. The NBA announced the decision a few hours before tip-off. Area shelters received food that had already been prepared before the postponement in Milwaukee.

What Day Were Games Moved To?

The NBA has not made an official announcement yet as to what dates the games will be rescheduled to, but WFAA out of Dallas stated that their sources said it will likely be rescheduled for February 19.

Currently the league has yet to make an announcement as to what date the Denver Nuggets and Memphis Grizzlies game will be rescheduled for.

NBA Postpones Timberwolves vs. Warriors Game

The NBA also postponed a game in Minneapolis on Saturday for non-weather related reasons. Saturday’s game was supposed to take place in Minneapolis as the Golden State Warriors were supposed to travel to Minnesota to take on the Timberwolves.

The league cited “safety and security” of the community as the reason for the postponement of the game after a man was fatally shot Saturday morning by federal agents in Minneapolis.

With the postponement, the NBA shifted the game to Sunday and the Timberwolves and Warriors played each other on back-to-back nights, as the second game was played on Monday as regularly scheduled.

According to the Athletic, “When the gravity of the situation started to sink in, members of the Timberwolves organization recommended to the league that the game not be played.”
