Stripe has introduced a new feature that supports the Base blockchain network for its x402 payment protocol. This update is currently in preview and allows AI agents to make small payments seamlessly using USD Coin (USDC). Through this feature, businesses can set up automated billing for services such as data access and processing power, providing a smoother experience for AI-driven transactions.
Stripe now integrates the Base blockchain network to support the x402 payment protocol. This integration enables AI agents to perform payments automatically and quickly. These agents can make low-cost, instant transactions using USDC, which eliminates the need for manual billing or traditional subscriptions. The system was designed with AI agents in mind, ensuring that it works without human supervision.
Stripe’s integration with Base allows for faster and cheaper settlements. “AI agents need payment systems that are fast, reliable, and available at all times,” said Stripe’s product manager, Jeff Weinstein. This new feature aims to meet those needs by providing a seamless way for agents to make payments as part of their operations.
The x402 payment protocol revives the old HTTP status code “402 Payment Required,” reimagining it for the digital age. Under this protocol, AI agents can quickly access services by making payments in USDC. Once an agent sends the payment to a unique wallet address, the transaction is processed, and the service is unlocked.
Businesses can monitor payments in real-time through the Stripe dashboard or by using Stripe’s webhooks and API. After the payment is confirmed, the funds are deposited into the merchant’s Stripe balance. This setup simplifies the process of managing payments for businesses, as it integrates directly with Stripe’s existing tools for tax reporting, refunds, and compliance.
Base provides low fees and fast settlement times, making it ideal for frequent, low-value transactions. The new system is perfect for cases where payments are needed per request or per minute of usage. This setup is especially useful in industries where AI agents are used to access data or computing resources.
Stripe also released an open-source command-line tool called “purl” to help developers test the new payment system. The tool is accompanied by sample code in Python and Node.js, making it easier for developers to integrate the new payment method into their services.
