Africa’s premier development finance institution, the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), has launched the Afreximbank Accelerator Program to nurture startups driving intra-continental trade. This three-month initiative targets innovative solutions in cross-border payments, trade finance, and digital commerce, aligning directly with African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) objectives.
The Afreximbank Accelerator Program combines virtual learning, specialised modules, workshops, and personalised mentorship. Participants attend three in-person sessions at regional hubs, including Afreximbank’s Cairo headquarters. These gatherings foster networking with government stakeholders, business executives, and multilateral organisations.
Selected startups gain up to $250,000 in equity investment, plus market access and strategic partnerships. The programme equips entrepreneurs in sectors including agriculture, logistics, e-commerce, and mining to scale operations rapidly. Expert mentors refine business models specifically for the African market landscape.
Afreximbank launched the first cohort during the Cairo kick-off week starting 23-27 March 2026. The initiative features eight high-potential startups chosen from over 1,600 applications across Africa and the diaspora. The selection process involved rigorous review by a panel of investors, trade experts, and industry leaders, focusing on innovation, market potential, and alignment with continental trade priorities.
The cohort advances through the programme, culminating in a Demo Day for global investors and policymakers. This structured approach represents Afreximbank’s strategic shift towards private sector innovation, elevating traditional development finance with equity participation and market exposure.
For investors, the programme signals mature opportunities within Africa’s digital trade ecosystem. As startups secure funding and partnerships, they position AfCFTA as a viable market integrator. Early backers benefit from scalable ventures tackling critical trade bottlenecks across the continent. Demo Day offers direct access to vetted innovators, potentially yielding significant returns amid rising intra-African commerce volumes.
